For the vast majority of retailers in Switzerland, operating their own warehouse in the EU or shipping there is a costly and nerve-racking affair. As a result, many retailers refrain from doing so for the time being.

Swiss merchants are afraid of the complicated handling, VAT invoicing, high customs and postage costs or the long shipping time.

On the other hand, the EU is one of the largest markets in the world: around 450 million potential customers within one economic area are tempting for any retailer.

If a retailer delivers to the EU via traditional postal services, the end customer receives a subsequent invoice for customs and VAT, which can turn the shopping experience into a unpleasant surprise.

Columbus makes shipping from Switzerland to the EU easier than ever before. At the same time, all customs and VAT charges are declared correctly, so that neither the end customer nor the retailer need to worry about negative surprises.

Since July 1, 2021 at the latest, no trader can avoid making a correct import and VAT declaration. Inadequately or incorrectly declared shipments will be rejected or lead to problems with the tax authorities. A correct VAT declaration makes sense from the very first euro of sales.

With Columbus EU Fulfillment, a retailer from Switzerland can easily serve EU customers and thus increase sales.

The merchant can serve the EU end customers on his website as other customers (optionally in the local currency, each with the correct local VAT) and offer a worry-free shipping.

After the customer order, the retailer can send the package to Columbus’ Switzerland address, just like a normal customer order within Switzerland (or have the Switzerland warehouse operated directly by Columbus). Columbus then brings the goods across the border on behalf of the retailer, does the customs clearance and delivers the products via desired courier services to the end customers in the EU.

With this service, the retailer can export without additional tax and issue a correct invoice including VAT to the end customer in the country of delivery.

Columbus also takes care of the VAT settlements in the EU and takes the role of the fiscal representative.

In detail

  • The ERP system of the dealer is connected to Columbus.
  • The retailer defines the product range to be sold.
  • The retailer adapts his online store so that EU customers can also order. Depending on the country, the correct VAT and currency must be displayed. Modern store systems (or the one from Columbus) have the necessary currency and VAT selection.
  • The dealer sends all EU parcels collectively to the Swiss address of Columbus (and at the same time transmits the orders electronically).
  • Columbus clears these shipments through customs and ships them within 24 hours with the requested delivery service.
  • Thanks to the correct customs clearance, the customer is not charged any subsequent handling fees. The end customer does not even notice that the package comes from Switzerland.
